ANDRA MATIN
Andra Matin is one of the first architects to be a part of the Potato Head family. His work involves clean and modern interpretations of traditional design, and is always informed by the surrounding environments that his buildings are in. In this exhibition, a scalable version of his most iconic work for Potato Head, the open-air colosseum that surrounds the Beach Club, a significant landmark of Bali, will be displayed.
ANDREU CARULLA
Andreu Carulla is a Catalan-born experimental designer whose works focus around materiality while embodying craftsmanship and sustainability. His studio transcends any one design discipline. His new experimentations with waste materials will be revealed in this exhibition.
BYO LIVING
BYO Living is a customisation company founded by Lim Masulin focusing on weaving technology. Drawing on the mastery of traditional Indonesian weavers, BYO Living employs multi-disciplinary techniques to create innovative and energy-efficient design in architecture. At the National Design Centre, you can find his work in the form of recycled plastic bottle caps, aptly woven into furnishings at Desa Potato Head.
DOM HAMMOND
Dom Hammond is the head chef of Potato Head’s plant-based degustation restaurant, Tanaman. She is a plant-based chef whose philosophy is informed by a contentious appreciation of the earth. She sees a holistic relationship between our food systems and the human body. For this exhibition, Hammond will be serving a series of zero waste canapés which draw on flavours from the restaurant’s ‘flavour library’.
ECO MANTRA
Eco Mantra is a Bali-based environmental engineering consultancy. Founded by Sean Nino, Maitri Fischer and Wayan Lam in 2014, the firm are the functioning cogs behind the operations that bring our visions of sustainability to life. They provide the systems which allow us to maximise the efficiency of our resources, crunch the numbers in environmental accounting, and provide guidance in shaping our design philosophy.
FUTURA
Futura is an American graffiti artist who pioneered abstract street art in 70's New York. Futura’s work reflects his obsession with science fiction and technology while presenting a social commentary on the industrialisation of modernity. The waterways of Indonesia face a dire pollution crisis in part, due to a lack of environmental accountability in the contemporary development landscape. To demonstrate the gravity of the issue, Futura will be creating sculptures from repurposed waste materials collected from these waterways with Potato Head.
KENGO KUMA
Japanese architect Kengo Kuma draws on the amalgamation of architecture and nature, creating a dialogue between buildings and the places that they are built on. In solely using natural materials that are acquired locally, he evokes an intuitive harmony and tenderness in his designs. This exhibition will unveil a new architectural material developed by Kengo Kuma which repurposes plastic bags into bricks.
MAX LAMB
Max Lamb is a British designer and a long time friend of Potato Head. His work operates at the intersection of place, material and tradition –all with sustainability at the core. He has designed a series of furnishings and amenities for the Potato Head Studios that have become a core part of the identity of the rooms. His work draws on the typography of Bali, using local materials and traditional craftsmanship techniques. An exploration into the waste material that he utilises will be on display at the exhibition.
OMA
An international design practice led by David Gianotten operating within the traditional boundaries of architecture and urbanism. Together with Potato Head, OMA designed the Potato Head Studios, which opened in 2020, subverting the conventional hotel typology by creating a hotel space which is part of the local community.
TOOGOOD DESIGN
Toogood is led by two sisters, Faye and Erica. They have created a name for themselves in the industry with their collections appearing in museums globally. Their practice is multi-disciplinary and non-conformist, working with architects, sculptures, illustrators, fashion designers and furniture makers alike. As a result, their work is naturally avant-garde. In this exhibition, you can find their original design of the rattan chairs and stools –as well as its reiterations which have been made with repurposed single use plastic bottles– which can be found in the public spaces of the Potato Head Desa.
THIBAUT GREVET
Thibaut Grevet is a director and photographer from Lyon, France. With his small town origins and passion for the outdoors, Grevet’s work has an air of inimitable earnestness. He employs a contemporary approach to capture the real. His photography series will be on display, presenting a sincere and raw side of Bali’s natural and human landscapes.
